Robin Sims Sartain – I Refuse To Be Fucking Invisible!

Robin Sims Sartain is not fucking invisible.  This woman is a powerhouse, dynamite in a tiny package tied with the most elegant bow.  I met Robin around 1972, we attended high school together for 2 years before she left to get married. Robin has stayed in touch with many friends from her teen years, meeting with them regularly and camping annually with her girls’ group. Today Robin is a Mom to two beautiful children and Mee-ma to six grandchildren.

Robin worked for and retired from Publix a few years ago where she worked for over 23 years. Since retiring she and her roommate John have traveled the globe, their most recent trip was to South Africa.Β  They have traveled and kayaked in Alaska and hiked the Alps in Switzerland, sharing their adventures on Facebook throughout their travels.

Robin is an open book, she will tell you anything, a good rule would be don’t ask Robin anything if you don’t really want to know the answer.Β  So, I asked Robin about her ALS diagnosis in 2016.Β  It was devastating she said and really “threw me but, afterΒ  four months I knew I needed to keep moving forward.”Β  With regular doctor visits today Robin walks with hiking sticks, still drives and continues to enjoy adventurous travel with John.Β  She knows the prognosis and explained to me the gradually debilitating effects of her disease and how it manifests in her daily life, she explains with a wisdom and a humor I have rarely seen.

I asked Robin to be a part of my series not because she feels invisible but because she refuses to be invisible to herself or to the world. Her focus on life, every minute of every day has helped me to rethink my project.Β  Not because some of us have suddenly become visible but because this woman, Robin Sims Sartain has fucking refused to become invisible, she just refuses and fuck you if you don’t like it.Β  She is full, joyful, a raging Democrat (you know I love that), loved, loving, sassy, smart and beautiful.Β  She opened my eyes today, this smart, lovely woman; My goal for this project was to grow, as a photographer, a human and a woman. To try and understand the feeling of invisibility by talking to other women who have felt the same but now after photographing Robin my direction is expanding, growing and damn I sure am learning a lot. Thank you, Robin, you inspire me.
